MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -All-Star center fielder Grady Sizemore was out of Cleveland’s lineup Monday to rest for the stretch run, putting his streak of 332 consecutive games played in doubt.
Sizemore has the second-longest current streak in the majors behind the Dodgers’ Juan Pierre, who had played 408 straight entering Los Angeles’ game later in the day at the Chicago Cubs.
Kenny Lofton led off against the Twins and played center field, because manager Eric Wedge wanted to give each of his regulars a day off during a 10-game road trip that began with Monday afternoon’s game in Minnesota.
“The streak’s an individual thing. This is about our team and what’s best for our team,” Wedge said.
Sizemore played in all 162 games last season, but Wedge has wanted to give him occasional rest to keep him fresh.
