CLEVELAND (AP) -Cleveland Indians catcher Victor Martinez, sidelined for more than two months with an injured right elbow, was activated from the disabled list ahead of Friday’s game against the Seattle Mariners.
He’ll start at first base in the series opener.
Martinez, a two-time All-Star, had surgery on his elbow on June 13. He was batting .278 with 21 RBIs in 54 games before the Indians placed him on the DL.
The Indians, who have won 10 straight games and 16 of 19, are expected to use Martinez primarily at designated hitter and first base until the end of the season.
To make room for Martinez, the Indians designated infielder Andy Gonzalez for assignment.
