CHICAGO (AP) -Kansas City Royals cleanup hitter Joe Guillen was out of the lineup Friday night against the Chicago White Sox because of back spasms.
Manager Trey Hillman said Guillen took batting practice in a cage three straight days during the All-Star break, but he began to have back spasms Thursday night.
“Hopefully we’ll get him ready for tomorrow. It’s not really the way we wanted to start out,” Hillman said, adding that Guillen came to the park early Friday to begin treatments.
“It’s one of those things you got to battle through,” Hillman added.
Guillen is batting .270 with 13 homers, 29 doubles and 65 RBIs, fourth most in the American League. He has played in the outfield and been the Royals’ DH.
Billy Butler was the DH and cleanup hitter Friday night.
