MILWAUKEE (AP) – The Brewers’ new leadoff hitter can aggravate pitchers by slugging homers or stealing bases.
Carlos Gomez is flustering other teams, and his aggressive and energetic approach to the game has helped Milwaukee jump out to the best record in baseball at 16-6.
While he wasn’t making a direct comparison, Padres manager Bud Black said Gomez’s skills remind him in a way of Rickey Henderson, who was a power-speed threat in his prime.
Gomez annoyed Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole this week after the two exchanged words in an altercation that caused benches to empty. It re-started another periodic discussion of the game’s ”unwritten rules.”
Gomez is appealing a three-game suspension for his role. He has said the discipline wasn’t fair and that he didn’t start the fracas.
