NEW YORK (AP) -Jason Giambi’s foot still hurts, and the New York Yankees slugger likely will have another scan next week to determine how fast he is recovering from a severe injury.
Giambi arrived at Yankee Stadium about 45 minutes before Friday night’s game against Oakland and said the boot that had been on his left foot since May 31 was removed Monday, when he saw Dr. William Hamilton.
“He wanted to me to start walking around in my shoe a little bit, and I started getting treatment on it, with massages, trying to get the scar tissue out of there,” Giambi said. “It’s still sore.”
Giambi’s foot bothered him for nearly a month and then he felt a pop rounding the bases on a home run at Toronto on May 29. He was diagnosed with a partially torn plantar fascia, connective tissue between the heel and the base of the toes that supports the arch of the foot, and plantar fasciitis, inflamed tissue that causes pain near the heel.
At the time, the Yankees said he would be re-examined in three weeks. Giambi said Friday that Hamilton had taken a slower approach.
“I’m doing some exercises trying to stretch the bottom of my foot. He doesn’t want me to really do too much more than that,” Giambi said.
Giambi is due to see Hamilton again Monday and said a scan probably will be taken then. There is no timetable for his return to the field, and it is possible the former AL MVP could miss the rest of the season.
Last week, Giambi agreed to speak with former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, who is heading baseball’s steroids investigation, and admitted he had a “personal history regarding steroids.” He is the first active player known to have agreed to meet with Mitchell.
