BOSTON (AP) -Baltimore third baseman Ryan Freel was helped off the field after getting hit in the head by Boston pitcher Justin Masterson’s pickoff attempt at second in the third inning during Monday’s annual Patriots’ Day game against the Red Sox.
Freel, who reached on a single and was sacrificed by Felix Pie, was diving back to the bag when Masterson’s throw hit him on the right side of the head and caromed away. He was lying on his stomach for a few minutes while being checked on by the Orioles training staff. He then was helped to his feet and walked off, appearing dazed, with both arms extended over the shoulders of Baltimore’s trainers.
Freel was replaced by pinch-runner Robert Andino, who took over at third in the bottom of the inning.
