TORONTO (AP) -Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter Frank Thomas homered in his first two at bats Saturday, giving him 505 for his career and moving him past Eddie Murray into sole possession of 20th place on baseball’s career list.
Thomas tied Murray on the career list when he homered on the first pitch he saw from Texas starter Willie Eyre with two on and nobody out in the bottom of the first, giving Toronto a 5-0 lead.
It was the 17th home run of the season for Thomas, who had not connected since homering twice against Minnesota on July 23, eight games ago. The shot ended a 66-inning home run drought for Toronto, its longest since a 69-inning span in 2005.
Thomas then led off the third with a solo drive to left that put the Blue Jays ahead 7-2. It’s his second multihomer game of the season and the 31st of his career.
Thomas, who became the 21st player in baseball history to hit 500 home runs on June 28 at Minnesota, is six homers from tying Mel Ott (511) for 19th place.
