NEW YORK (AP) -Former San Francisco Giants pitching prospect Thomas King was suspended for 50 games Friday after testing positive for a drug of abuse under baseball’s minor league drug program.
King, a 23-year-old right-hander, was released by the Giants on June 23 after going 0-0 with a 2.70 ERA and one save in 10 relief appearances with Class A Augusta of the South Atlantic League.
He is the 19th player suspended this year under baseball’s minor league program, the fifth for a drug of abuse. Two players have been suspended under the major league program: Tampa Bay pitcher Juan Salas (performance-enhancing substance) and Detroit infielder Neifi Perez (stimulant).
King’s suspension will start when he signs with any major league organization.
