PHOENIX (AP) -The Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated right fielder Justin Upton from the 15-day disabled list and claimed left-hander Wil Ledezma off waivers from the San Diego Padres on Friday.
The Diamondbacks also recalled righty Max Scherzer from Triple-A Tucson to bolster their bullpen before the NL West leaders hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Upton was out since July 9 with a strained oblique in his left side. He will join a crowded outfield that has Conor Jackson, Chris Young and recently acquired Adam Dunn. Manager Bob Melvin said Dunn could see time at first base.
Ledezma is expected to report on Saturday, and the team will have to make a corresponding roster move then.
The 27-year-old Ledezma went 0-2 with a 4.47 ERA in 25 games, including six starts, with the Padres this season. Melvin said he planned to use Ledezma in middle relief.
To make room for Upton and Scherzer, the club optioned outfielder Alex Romero and right-hander Leo Rosales to Tucson.
