CHICAGO (AP) -All-Star catcher Geovany Soto has been scratched from the Cubs’ lineup against the St. Louis Cardinals because of a sore left hand and is day to day.
X-rays taken before Friday’s game revealed no structural damage, Cubs spokesman Peter Chase said. Soto hurt his hand on a swing early in Thursday’s 12-inning, 7-6 win over Milwaukee, but went on to hit the tying three-run homer off closer Salomon Torres with two out in the ninth.
The first National League rookie to start an All-Star game, Soto is batting .285 with 23 homers and 86 RBIs.
The Cubs would clinch their second straight NL Central title Friday if they beat St. Louis and Milwaukee loses at Cincinnati.
