CHICAGO (AP) -Minnesota Twins third baseman Joe Crede was scratched from the lineup Sunday against the Chicago Cubs because of a stiff lower back.
An All-Star last year with the White Sox, Crede has been bothered throughout his career by back problems. He played sparingly in the second half and eventually signed with the Twins in the offseason after the White Sox made no attempt to bring him back.
He was batting .228 with 10 homers and 27 RBIs for Minnesota. With Crede out, Matt Tolbert started at third base and led off. Shortstop Brendan Harris, who was originally at the top of the order, batted fifth.
The Twins were also without outfielders Michael Cuddyer (right index finger) and Denard Span (inner ear infection).
