NEW YORK (AP) -The Chicago White Sox have decided to skip Jose Contreras’ turn in the rotation as they try to figure out exactly what’s wrong with the struggling right-hander.
Contreras allowed seven runs and eight hits in 2 2-3 innings in a 16-3 loss to the New York Yankees on Tuesday night. He has lost his last seven starts and nine of his last 10.
“Right now that’s what we’ve got to do for the good of Jose,” manager Ozzie Guillen said.
Gavin Floyd will start Sunday against Detroit, and Contreras will be used out of the bullpen. Guillen said the plan is for Contreras to miss one turn, but that may change if Floyd pitches well.
“I think right now his head is spinning all over the place,” Guillen said of Contreras. “He’s a kid that’s always pitched well and we’ll see if this move helps him to get better for the rest of the season.”
Contreras is 5-14 with a 6.60 ERA in 21 starts this season after going 13-9 with a 4.27 ERA last year. He has a career record of 53-41 with a 4.65 ERA.
