PITTSBURGH (AP) -Catcher Raul Chavez and utilityman Jose Macias agreed Friday on minor league contracts with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Chavez has a .212 career average with four home runs and 169 career games with Montreal, Seattle, Houston and Baltimore since he broke into the majors in 1996. The 34-year-old Chavez had a .221 average with four homers and 31 RBIs in 86 games for the Yankees’ Triple A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre farm club last season.
Macias, who turns 34 this month, has played in 659 major league games with Detroit, Montreal and the Chicago Cubs, last appearing in the majors with the Cubs in 2005. He has a .256 career average.
Last season, Macias played first base, second base, third base, left field and center field at various times for the Brewers’ Triple-A Nashville farm club, hitting .242 with two homers and 32 RBIs in 107 games.
