ST. LOUIS (AP) -Cardinals left-hander Mark Mulder, recovering from two shoulder operations, will begin his second rehab stint on Saturday for Double-A Springfield, while Chris Carpenter experienced a setback.
Mulder, who halted his first rehab in May, appeared to be back on track for a mid-July return. Meanwhile, Carpenter was seen by team physician Dr. George Paletta on Friday for discomfort in his surgically-repaired right elbow.
The Cardinals had been forecasting a mid-July return for the 1995 NL Cy Young Award winner, who made one start last year before requiring reconstructive surgery. The results of the exam were not immediately made available.
Mulder will throw in the opener of a doubleheader on Saturday while a third pitcher, right-hander Matt Clement, is scheduled to make his second rehab start in the second game. Clement missed all last season following shoulder surgery.
Closer Jason Isringhausen, on the 15-day disabled list recovering from a loss of confidence as well as a lacerated hand, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday in St. Louis. Isringhausen made a rehab appearance on Wednesday for Springfield and could be activated next week.
