ST. LOUIS (AP) -The St. Louis Cardinals claimed left-handed reliever Charlie Manning off waivers from Washington on Wednesday.
The 29-year-old Manning was added to the Cardinals’ 40-man major league roster. To make room, the team designated first baseman Josh Phelps for assignment.
Manning made his major league debut last season with the Nationals, appearing in 57 games. He was 1-3 with a 5.14 earned run average. But left-handed hitters batted just .203 against him.
The Cardinals tied for the major league lead with 31 blown saves and were near the top with 31 relief losses.
