PITTSBURGH (AP) -Brewers All-Star shortstop J.J. Hardy became ill with flu-like symptoms before Tuesday afternoon’s game in Pittsburgh and returned to the team hotel.
Utilityman Craig Counsell took Hardy’s place in the lineup. Hardy is not expected to be sidelined more than a day or two.
Hardy, who earned his spot on the NL All-Star team in the players’ balloting, is hitting .333 (5-for-15) on Milwaukee’s current road trip to Chicago and Pittsburgh. He is fifth in the NL with 18 home runs and had a 19-game hitting streak earlier this season.
