MILWAUKEE (AP) -Milwaukee Brewers catcher Mike Rivera sprained his left ankle in a play at the plate in the fourth inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.
Brian Bixler tagged up from third base on Nyjer Morgan’s sacrifice fly to left and slid hard into Rivera, whose knee and ankle bent awkwardly while he was trying to block the plate. Bixler was safe to give Pittsburgh a 3-1 lead.
Rivera got up but quickly crumpled to the ground clutching the ankle. After several minutes, Rivera stayed in the game and completed the top of the fourth, but was pinch hit for in the bottom of the inning by Jason Kendall.
Rivera is starter Dave Bush’s regular catcher and is batting .308 with one RBI this season in 13 at-bats.
