ATLANTA (AP) -Braves pitcher Kenshin Kawakami has left his start against the New York Yankees after being struck in the right shoulder by a line drive in the third inning.
Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain hit the liner, which was fielded on the deflection by shortstop Yunel Escobar. Chamberlain was thrown out to end the inning, while Kawakami remained down on the mound.
The right-hander was tended briefly by the Braves trainer and manager Bobby Cox before walking off the field. But Kawakami went straight to the clubhouse for treatment and was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the bottom half of the third.
Kris Medlen came in to pitch for Atlanta in the fourth. There was no immediate word on the severity of Kawakami’s injury.
