LOS ANGELES (AP) -Opening-day starter Brad Penny was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday – a day after being pounded for six runs and six hits in three innings by the Philadelphia Phillies.
The 30-year-old right-hander had been sidelined from June 14 until last Friday night because of tendinitis in his right shoulder. He gave up one run in five innings at San Francisco in his first start after coming off the disabled list, but his second outing was a different story.
“Brad got a shot and I believe won’t try and throw again for five days,” manager Joe Torre said. “He had an MRI. I have no idea when he will be able to come back. We’ve been trying to get this thing well. He’s had some rest. He’s still got some shoulder strength. It’s something that’s been nagging him. It’s more frustrating for him than anybody else.”
Penny, 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 33 starts last season, is 6-9 with a 6.05 ERA in 17 starts this year.
The Dodgers also placed right-hander Cory Wade on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to last Saturday, because of inflammation in his right shoulder. Wade is 2-1 with a 2.56 ERA in 40 relief appearances.
To fill the open spots on their 25-man roster, the Dodgers recalled left-hander Eric Stults from Triple-A Las Vegas and purchased the contract of right-hander Tanyon Sturtze from Las Vegas.
The 28-year-old Stults was recalled for his second tour with the Dodgers this year. He had a 2-2 record with a 3.18 ERA in six starts earlier, including a four-hit shutout against the Chicago White Sox on June 25. He went 2-0 with a 4.70 ERA in four starts with Las Vegas after being optioned on July 22, and is 7-6 with a 3.83 ERA in 18 starts with the 51s overall.
The 37-year-old Sturtze went 1-1 with five saves and a 4.13 ERA in 21 games with Las Vegas after beginning the year with Double-A Jacksonville, where he was 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA in 18 appearances.
Sturtze has a 40-44 record with three saves and a 5.21 ERA in 269 big league games, 84 of them starts. He last pitched in the majors in 2006, making 16 appearances for the New York Yankees, managed by Torre.
