TORONTO (AP) -The Blue Jays sent struggling right-hander Shaun Marcum to Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday and recalled left-hander John Parrish from Triple-A.
Marcum, 8-6 with a 3.60 ERA in 22 starts, allowed five runs and six hits in 3 2-3 innings of Friday’s 8-4 defeat to Boston, his first loss in five outings. Marcum, who missed 27 games earlier this season with a sore elbow, is 3-2 with a 6.19 ERA in seven starts since coming off the disabled list July 22.
General manager J.P. Ricciardi said Marcum has struggled with location since returning from the DL.
“He really hasn’t been himself, so we’re going to give him a couple starts down in Triple-A just to see if he can get his mechanics back together,” Ricciardi said.
Toronto entered play Saturday 12 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East and eight games behind Boston for the wild card.
“We’ve got some chance to catch these guys and we want to put the best possible group out there we can right now,” Ricciardi said.
Parrish, who will start Thursday at Tampa Bay, is 1-0 with a 4.05 ERA in seven games, including four starts. He won his Toronto debut, beating Atlanta on June 28, and has not pitched since a three-inning relief stint against Cleveland on Aug. 10. He was demoted to Triple-A on Aug. 12.
