TORONTO (AP) -Shortstop Royce Clayton was given his unconditional release by the Blue Jays on Tuesday, leaving the 37-year-old with an uncertain baseball future.
Clayton was designated for assignment Friday when the club decided to begin auditioning other players for a utility role next season.
The Blue Jays had 10 days to trade, release or assign Clayton to the minors and with no takers, they cut ties.
Clayton, an All-Star 10 years ago with St. Louis, played in 2,100 games over 17 seasons with 10 different teams. This season, he hit .254 in 69 games, with a homer and 12 RBIs. His defensive range had diminished significantly and he made seven errors in 68 games in the field with Toronto.
