KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -Texas Rangers third baseman Hank Blalock was out of the lineup for Thursday night’s game against Tampa Bay because of a knot behind his right shoulder.
Blalock was scheduled to be examined by team physician Dr. Keith Meister. The Rangers didn’t rule out Blalock playing in Friday’s game with Houston.
“He wanted to go,” Texas manager Ron Washington said. “The doctor decided we have to back off today.”
Blalock has experienced some discomfort in his right arm. Preliminary reports indicate the problem is a muscular issue.
“Hopefully a one-day thing,” Texas general manager Jon Daniels said.
Utility man Jerry Hairston Jr., who left Wednesday’s game with a sore shoulder after diving for a ball, has a pinched nerve in his neck. The decision on whether he will go on the disabled list could be made by Friday.
Daniels said if the injury would sideline Hairston more than a few days, he would be placed on the DL.
Outfielder Victor Diaz, who was hit on the left hand by a pitch Wednesday, was in the lineup Thursday.
Washington, who tweaked his left hamstring running to argue a close call at second base Wednesday, said his leg is feeling better.
When asked what he would do if he decided to argue a call Thursday, Washington said he won’t run.
“Briskly walk out there” he said.
