HOUSTON (AP) -The Houston Astros optioned right fielder Jason Lane to Triple-A Round Rock and called up outfielder Chris Burke after the St. Louis Cardinals’ 8-6 win Sunday.
Lane is hitting .167 in 35 games and made the last out in Sunday’s game. the right-batting Lane was splitting time in right field this season with left-hand hitting Luke Scott.
“I’m not glad to be going down,” Lane said. “But I feel like I can help a team while playing every day. It’s tough to do this role I was doing. It’s tough to get on track.”
Burke played mostly center field and batted .238 in 28 games. He was sent down to Round Rock on May 11 to make room for rookie Hunter Pence, who homered in Sunday’s loss and is hitting .358, the best average among major league rookies.
The Astros have lost 14 of their last 17 games and have scored four runs or fewer in 13 of the losses.
Astros general manager Tim Purpura said Burke will share time with Scott and also see time at the middle-infield positions.
