CHICAGO (AP) -Alfonso Soriano came off the 15-day disabled list and right into the Chicago Cubs’ lineup Tuesday as they began a key three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Soriano sustained a small tear in his right quadriceps muscle as he ran the bases on Aug. 5 against the New York Mets. He went on the DL the next day and the Cubs were 8-11 without him in the starting lineup.
Soriano, who signed a $136 million, eight-year contract with the Cubs in the offseason, was batting .297 with 18 homers and 42 RBIs in 104 games. He was put right back into the leadoff spot Tuesday night, playing left field.
The Cubs optioned left-hander Carmen Pignatiello to Triple-A Iowa to clear a roster spot. The team also announced that catcher Koyie Hill had cleared waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Iowa. Hill had been designated for assignment on Aug. 20.
