Joe Musgrove and Carlos Carrasco had been locked in in a scoreless pitcher’s duel heading into the sixth inning. Eric Hosmer clubbed a solo homer for the Padres in the top half of the frame to give the Padres the lead before Alonso unloaded on a hanging slider from Musgrove for his 425-foot game-changing blast. He also smacked an RBI double in the seventh inning, finishing the night 2-for-3 plus a walk with four RBI. He’s enjoying a terrific season at the dish, slashing .274/.349/.534 with 25 homers and 82 RBI.
