Getting the start for Washington is Gio Gonzalez (13-6, 2.58 ERA), while Miami will go with Dillon Peters (0-0, 0.86 ERA). Gonzalez boasts a 1.14 WHIP with 159 strikeouts in 174 2/3 innings. He allowed five earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in a 6-3 loss at the Brewers. Gonzalez has a 3.21 ERA in 14 road starts. Peters made his MLB debut on September 1 and was fantastic, throwing seven shutout innings with three hits along with eight strikeouts and three walks in a 2-1 loss at the Phillies.
Washington enters with an 84-54 record and is 44-27 on the road, while Miami is 67-71 and 36-34 at home. The Nationals have won nine of the last 10 meetings and the over-under is 4-5-1.
On Tuesday night, Washington prevailed 2-1 as Stephen Strasburg threw six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts to earn the win. Sean Doolittle picked up his 15th save. Daniel Murphy was 2-for-4 with a solo home run to key the offense. Adam Lind went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run. Pedro Severino finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Odrisamer Despaigne gave up one earned run over seven innings to take the loss. Marcel Ozuna was 3-for-4 and scored the lone Marlins run.
Gonzalez has pitched his best baseball in years this season and has been a candidate for regression the last couple months, but was resistant to it until a poor start his last time out. The Marlins have power hitters, such as Giancarlo Stanton and Ozuna, that match up well against the offerings of Gonzalez. Peters is still an unknown commodity, but breezed through his first MLB start. This is a much tougher test, but he should be at the very least sufficient against a lineup that hasn’t seem him. We’ll take the home team here.
