Pitching for Seattle will be Felix Hernandez (5-4, 4.28 ERA), while Texas turns to Andrew Cashner (9-9, 3.19). Hernandez is making his first start since going on the disabled list after his July 31 outing. He has a 1.36 WHIP with 69 strikeouts in 73 1/3 innings. In his last start, he allowed four earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks over 5 1/3 innings in a 6-4 win at the Rangers. He has a 5.40 ERA in 23 1/3 road innings. Cashner has a 1.26 WHIP with 78 strikeouts over 146 2/3 innings. He allowed one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk over seven innings in a 3-1 home loss to the Yankees his last start. Cashner has a 2.23 ERA in 11 home starts.
Seattle is 73-73 on the season and 34-37 on the road, while Texas is 72-72 and 39-34 at home. The Mariners have won six of the last 10 meetings and the total has gone under six times.
Two out of the three games in the series have been won by Seattle including Wednesday’s 8-1 triumph. Mike Zunino hit a pair of solo home runs and drew two walks to pace the offense. Jean Segura was 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk, two runs and two RBIs. Mitch Haniger was 2-for-5 with a double and a run. Kyle Seager went 1-for-4 with a walk, a run and two RBIs. Mike Leake allowed one earned run over 5 2/3 innings to get the win. Elvis Andrus had a double and scored a run for the Rangers. Robinson Chirinos contributed an RBI single. Martin Perez gave up three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings to take the loss.
The Mariners should get a boost from the return of Hernandez, whose best days might be behind him but he is still a quality MLB starter and has plenty of name recognition. Seattle’s offense has come alive in this series and it should continue against Cashner, who remains one of the luckiest pitchers in baseball this season. We’re siding with Seattle here.
