Pitching for Colorado will be German Marquez (10-6, 4.26 ERA), while Los Angeles turns to Yu Darvish (8-11, 4.09). Marquez has a 1.30 WHIP with 134 strikeouts over 137 1/3 innings. He gave up four earned runs on six hits with nine strikeouts and no walks over six innings his last start, a 5-1 home loss to the Diamondbacks. He holds a 3.86 ERA in 12 road starts. Darvish has a 1.23 WHIP with 182 strikeouts in 163 innings. He was knocked around by the Padres on the road his last start, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks over three innings in a 7-2 loss. He has a 5.31 home ERA in 14 starts between the Rangers and Dodgers.
The Rockies are 75-65 overall and 34-34 on the road, while Los Angeles is 92-58 and 52-20 at home. The Dodgers have won six of the last 10 meetings and the total has gone under six times.
On Thursday night, Colorado rolled to a 9-1 victory as Jon Gray threw six innings of one-run ball for the win. Nolan Arenado was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs to key the offense. Charlie Blackmon was 2-for-3 with three walks and a run. Carlos Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored. Trevor Story finished 2-for-5 with a double and a run. Mark Reynolds added two hits. Clayton Kershaw uncharacteristically struggled as he allowed four earned runs in 3 2/3 innings to take the loss. Cody Bellinger had two doubles and scored a run, while Chris Taylor was 2-for-3. Yasiel Puig added an RBI double.
The Dodgers have lost 12 of their last 13 games, a remarkably bad and unprecedented stretch for a team that only a few weeks ago looked like they might challenge for best record in MLB history. We’ll say the struggles continue here, because Darvish hasn’t been showing signs of getting straightened out and Marquez is having a wonderful rookie season. Los Angeles will eventually get sorted out, but let’s take advantage of its bad baseball right now.
