Aaron Wilkerson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will be on the hill for Milwaukee, while Pittsburgh turns to Steven Brault (1-0, 4.38). Wilkerson was 11-4 with a 3.16 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP with 143 strikeouts and 36 walks over 142 1/3 innings at Double A ball this season. Brault has a 1.54 WHIP with 15 strikeouts in 24 1/3 innings. He threw six one-hit innings with six strikeouts and a walk in a 7-0 win at the Brewers his last outing. Brault has allowed six earned runs over 11 2/3 innings at home this season.
The Brewers are 81-70 and 40-37 on the road, while the Pirates come in at 68-84 and 39-36 at home. Milwaukee has won six of the last 10 meetings and the total has gone under eight times.
On Tuesday night, the Brewers held on for a 1-0 victiry as Chase Anderson threw six shutout innings with eight strikeouts to get the win. Domingo Santana went 2-for-4 with a home run to provide the offense. Corey Knebel picked up his 37th save. Starling Marte was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases for the Pirates. Trevor Williams allowed one earned run in five innings to take the loss.
The Pirates have a non-existent offense at this point and it’s difficult to see them even blasting an untested rookie. Brault was good in his last start, but is very hittable and is facing a lineup with plenty of right-handed power. Milwaukee is now only a game back in the race for the second NL Wild Card spot and is aware how much every game matters.
