Scherzer scores game-winning run
With no other candidates left on the bench, Washington employed ace pitcher Max Scherzer as a pinch hitter in the top of the 14th inning. He ended up hitting a single while scoring the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run on an RBI triple by Wilmer Difo. Spencer Kieboom would then drive in Difo with an RBI single and the final would be 5-3 in favor of the Nats. Juan Soto finished the game 3-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored. Kieboom ended his day 2-for-6 with the RBI. Justin Miller threw three perfect innings with five strikeouts to earn the win. Sean Doolittle, Washington’s seventh pitcher, threw a spotless 14th inning for his 14th save.
Camargo comes up big
With Atlanta trailing 2-0 in the fifth inning, third baseman Johan Camargo fixed that with one swing of the bat as his three-run homer put the hosts ahead 3-2. It was the only hit of the day for Camargo in five at-bats. Nick Markakis and Tyler Flowers both had a hit and scored a run. The Braves only had five hits in the contest. Miguel Socolovich took the loss in relief. Brandon McCarthy made the start, giving up two earned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks over six innings of work.
Jeremy Hellickson (2-0, 2.30 ERA) starts today for Washington, while Anibal Sanchez (1-0, 3.00) will take the mound for Atlanta.
MLB Betting Trends
Washington
The Nationals are 13-3 in their last 16 road games. Washington is 21-8 in its last 29 games overall.
Atlanta
The Braves are 6-2 in their last eight home games. The under is 6-2-2 in the last 10 meetings in Atlanta.
Prediction:
Both starting pitchers have the abillity to be quietly effective, but after the 14-inning thriller yesterday I’m sensing the Nats might have a letdown here. Atlanta has had a fantastic season thus far and is ahead of its projected timeline to compete. The Braves don’t want to fade away easily and with the veteran Sanchez on the mound, I think they will keep their hold on first place today.
