The standings context is lopsided. Cleveland is 72-70 and second in the AL Central; Detroit is 64-77 and out of the race. The Guardians are 6-4 in their last ten, the Tigers 3-7. The counter-case is real. Valdez walked nine Guardians in 10.2 innings this season, and traffic like that produces long innings and early exits. Cleveland put up seven and four runs in Friday’s two games. Messick also has one specific vulnerability here: five home runs allowed in three career starts against Detroit, with the Tigers slugging .500 off him in that sample. One swing changes the arithmetic on a 7.5.

The second angle rests on the same starter, and it is worth saying so plainly. Still, the price deserves scrutiny, and so does the bullpen picture. Cleveland’s relievers covered 10.1 innings on Friday, with Erik Sabrowski, Daniel Espino and Hunter Gaddis each throwing two. Closer Cade Smith worked one inning and should be available, but the middle relief behind Messick is thinner than usual. Detroit’s pen threw eight innings and had Thursday off.
