Cardinals’ Wainwright coming off much better outing
Adam Wainwright yielded three earned runs over seven innings Wednesday in a loss to the Brewers. It was a much sharper outing than his regular-season debut last Thursday against the Diamondbacks, in which he lasted just 3 2/3 innings and walked four batters. Wainwright issued no free passes on Wednesday and struck out four, though the Brewers did tag him for eight hits — including two home runs.
Quotable: “That’s how I pitched all spring training,” Wainwright told reporters after his start against the Brewers on April 11. “(The first start of the year) was the anomaly — not this one. I expect to go out and carry us deep into games.”
Cubs’ Chatwood not sharp in previous start vs. Pirates
Tyler Chatwood yielded five runs over five innings in a loss to the Pirates on Tuesday. Chatwood only walked one batter this time, but he gave up nine hits, including a solo homer to Starling Marte. The 28-year-old had some momentum as a fantasy sleeper after leaving Coors Field behind, but the results have been mixed through two starts.
Quotable: “We haven’t gotten any depth (from starters),” Joe Maddon said Saturday. “We’re surviving it and I look at that as a positive because they’re so good and they’re going to turn it on and they’re going to get on a nice little roll.”
MLB Betting Trends
St. Louis
The Cardinals are 11-4 in Wainwright’s last 15 starts against the Cubs and have won 13 of his last 18 road starts versus Chicago as well.
Chicago
The Cubs are a perfect 5-0 in their last five games versus the Cardinals in Chicago and have won eight of their last nine games versus St. Louis overall.
Prediction:
The Cardinals are 7-3 in Wainwright’s last 10 starts, are 4-1 in his last five road starts and are 44-20 in his last 64 outings versus the rest of the National League Central. Meanwhile, the Cubs are winless in their last five home games when facing a right-hander and given the fog that this team is in at the start of the year, I’ll roll the dice on the hotter team getting plus odds.
The Pick: St. Louis Cardinals +122
