Corbin carries D-backs into bout vs. Cards
St. Louis continues to pile up mammoth offensive numbers. The problem is that ace Adam Wainwright can’t seem to prevent the opposition from doing the same.
Wainwright’s search for a solution to his early-season woes hits the desert tonight. The Diamondbacks host the Cardinals in the second contest of a four-game series, with a 9:40 p.m. ET first pitch at Chase Field. Oddsmakers at online sports book BetDSI prefer the host squad as a 1.5-run favorite.
Before the campaign started, it would’ve been mind-boggling to bet against the leader of Mike Matheny’s staff. Then Wainwright proceeded to allow 18 runs and 29 base knocks in 22 1/3 innings. The swing-and-miss stuff certainly hasn’t materialized, either, as evidenced by a mere 10 Ks.
Thankfully, the Redbirds (11-9) boast no shortage of positives elsewhere. The bats powered young fireballer Carlos Martinez to an 8-2 victory last night, with Brandon Moss and Stephen Piscotty belting homers. Matheny’s troops have now claimed 14 of the past 16 meetings with Arizona.

Talented lefty Patrick Corbin (1-2, 3.51) aims to intervene in a few short hours. While the 26-year-old’s home stats pale in comparison to his accomplishment on the road, there’s little doubt that he will give the Cards a strong challenge. The visitors only hit .241 vs. southpaws, too.
Tuesday’s Martinez-Shelby Miller pairing began as a compelling duel before careening out of control in the fifth. We expect less in the way of total fireworks this evening, particularly since perennial MVP candidate Paul Goldschmidt (.247) remains relatively quiet.
