Beede respectable in major league debut for Giants
Tyler Beede allowed two earned runs, three hits with five walks and three strikeouts over just four innings in his major league debut Tuesday against the Diamondbacks. The 24-year-old righty from Vanderbilt University threw just 45 of his 87 pitches for strikes. The good news is that he didn’t serve up any home runs. Still, he negotiated a pretty strong Arizona offense and limited the damage. As long as he can cut down on his walks the rookie is going to be just fine.
Quotable: “I think there is a lot I can break down from that start– a lot of things I can work on moving forward,” Beede said of his major league debut. “I was not my sharpest, not my most efficient, but limited them to two runs over four (innings). But a lot to work on, for sure.”
Padres’ Lucchesi coming off first major league victory
Joey Lucchesi allowed two unearned runs, four hits, and a walk with eight strikeouts over six innings in a victory Tuesday in Colorado. Lucchesi picked up his first major league victory in Coors Field, certainly a difficult task for even the most veteran of pitchers. This game marked just the fifth time the entire San Diego pitching staff did not yield an earned run in a game at Coors Field. After so-so results in his initial assignment, he hasn’t allowed an earned run while striking out 15 batters over 11 innings across the past two starts.
Quotable: “We expected him to be in the major leagues sometime this season,” Padres manager Andy Green said shortly after Lucchesi was promoted to make the season’s season start. “It’s just a little sooner than expected, although he’s surely prepared for it. He had solid spring and was one of our last and toughest decisions.
MLB Betting Trends
San Francisco
The Giants are 1-4 in their last five games in San Diego and are 10-22 in their last 32 games versus the Padres overall.
San Diego
The Padres have dropped 16 of their last 23 games dating back to last season and are 3-8 in their last 11 home games.
Prediction:
Beede didn’t show me enough to back him today. He was competitive but he also walked five in four innings and struck out only three. His command has been a problem and despite his first-round status, Beede never really impressed in the minor leagues. After all, this wasn’t a kid taken out of high school. He’s a former Vanderbilt University starter taken in 2014 and is only in the rotation now because of a rash of injuries. I’m choosing to fade him; I’ll lay the small juice on the Padres.
The Pick: San Diego Padres -125
