Padres’ Lauer allows four runs to Pirates in last start
Eric Lauer allowed four runs over 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision Thursday against the Pirates. Neither Lauer nor Pirates starter Chad Kuhl was sharp, and neither factored in the decision. Lauer has now had three subpar turns and two decent ones through his first five MLB starts, which equates to an 8.14 ERA and 2.10 WHIP overall. Things don’t get any easier for the 22-year-old on Tuesday when the Padres cross the country to face the Nationals.
Nationals’ Hellickson pitches well in no-decision vs. Diamondbacks
Jeremy Hellickson pitched well in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks on Sunday, surrendering just one run on three hits over his five frames. The veteran right-hander punched out five on the evening and issued just one base on balls. The only blemish on his night came on an RBI triple by David Peralta in the third inning. He has been brilliant in his first six starts with the Nationals, compiling a 2.20 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 26/5 K/BB ratio across 32 2/3 innings.
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres are just 1-4 in their last five games versus the Nationals overall.
Washington
The under is 7-2-2 in the last 11 meetings between these two teams and is 5-2-1 in the last eight meetings in Washington.
Prediction:
While the under has been a great bet in this series over the last couple of years, I see value in the over tonight. Bryce Harper and the Nationals tuned up San Diego pitching on Monday night and I don’t see Lauer giving them much trouble tonight. And while Hellickson has been fantastic for the Nationals, he’s due for a negative regression carrying a .239 BABIP (suggesting at least part of his success this season can be credited to good fortunate).
The Pick: Padres/Nationals over 8.5
