Padres hit the road
San Diego is coming off a three-game sweep at home of the Arizona Diamondbacks before hitting the road to come out East. The Padres are 26-24 on the season, 12-10 on the road and 26-22 with the under. Joey Lucchesi gets the start for the Padres tonight. He is 3-3 on the season with a 4.28 ERA.
The Padres have a respectable pitching staff this season. They have a 3.90 team ERA and a 1.20 team WHIP. Offensively, San Diego puts up 3.76 runs per game while hitting .228 as a team. Franmil Reyes has 15 home runs and 27 RBI to lead the Padres while Hunter Renfroe has 11 home runs, nine doubles and 23 RBI.
Jays struggling
Toronto is coming off a four-game series loss at home to the Red Sox. They have now lost six of their last nine games coming into the weekend. The Blue Jays are 20-30 on the season, 9-16 at home and 28-21 with the under. Toronto has Trent Thornton taking the mound today. He is 1-4 on the season and has a 4.41 ERA.
The Blue Jays also are stronger on the mound than they are at the plate. The Jays have a 4.07 team ERA this season with a 1.32 team WHIP. Offensively, Toronto is putting up 3.76 runs per game while hitting a league-worst .218. Rowdy Tellez is leading the team with nine home runs and 25 RBI while Justin Smoak has eight home runs and 23 RBI.
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres are 7-2 in their last nine interleague games overall, but just 8-19 in their last 27 interleague road games.
Toronto
The Blue Jays are just 6-16 in their last 22 overall, but they have won five straight Friday games.
Prediction:
Lucchesi has been slowly working on improving his numbers. He has allowed just three earned runs over his last 12.1 innings of work and has five outings this season where he has given up two runs or less. Thronton is in a similar trend, allowing three runs over his last 11.2 innings. He has given up two runs or less in four of his last five starts. While Toronto has struggled, I think San Diego coming over from the West today will lead to a sluggish outing. I think with similar starters, I will go with Toronto at home.
MLB Prediction: Toronto Blue Jays +110
