San Diego Padres are off to Worst Start since 2013
After dropping two of three to the Astros over the weekend in Houston, the Padres are now off to their worst 10-game start since starting 2-8 in 2013. Making matters worse is how San Diego is losing games, with limited run support for its pitching staff and even blowing a game in extra-innings on Saturday when an infield pop-up led to a walk-off win for Houston.
The Padres are hitting just .221 after getting four hits in a 4-1 loss to the aforementioned Astros on Sunday. The club has scored three or fewer runs in six games and just twice has scored more than four runs in a game. The Padres also went hitless in six at-bats on Sunday with runners in scoring position, leaving them 0-for-15 in such situations the past two games.
Meanwhile, San Diego’s pitching has been sound and Clayton Richard will toe the rubber for the Friars tonight. He allowed five runs and eight hits in five innings and took the loss last Wednesday. He’s 5-7 with a 5.38 ERA in 20 games against the Rockies and is 1-5 with a n 8.82 ERA in nine starts at Coors Field.
Colorado Rockies’ Offense in a Deep Freeze as well
The Padres aren’t the only team in the National League West struggling to score runs. The Rockies scored 19 runs and won three of four in San Diego while batting .262 (27-for-103) in the process. But since that series, they scored six times and batted .225 while losing two of three to the Braves in their first series at Coors.
On Sunday, Colorado struck out a whopping 10 times while going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. In the series, the Rockies were 3-for-18 with RISP. They’ll hope for better results this weekend.

Prediction:
Ten runs? Ten runs with these two teams? I don’t care that the game is played in Coors, the Rockies proved to bettors over the weekend that their offense has a long way to go before it gets warmed up. And the Padres scored one run combined in two games at hitter-friendly Minute Maid Park over the weekend so I’m not worried about their offense either. Clearly oddsmakers haven’t felt the need to adjust yet to the Rockies’ offensive funk, which opens up the door for ‘under’ bettors to play the total tonight in what should be a snoozefest.
