Padres in a slump
San Diego has hit a rough patch right now, as the Padres have lost five of their last six games to the likes of the Braves and Marlins. San Diego is 46-50 overall, 23-23 on the road and 45-43 with the over. The Padres have Eric Lauer getting the start today. He is 5-7 on the year with a 4.04 ERA.
The Padres are doing nothing special at the plate or on the mound this year. San Diego is averaging 4.42 runs per game on offense while hitting .242 as a team. On the mound, the Padres have a 4.60 team ERA with a 1.27 team WHIP. Eric Hosmer is leading the team with 17 doubles, 13 home runs and 63 RBI while Manny Machado has 15 doubles, 23 home runs and 62 RBI.
Cubs staying warm
Chicago is off to a strong start to the second half of the season, winning five of their last six coming into this weekend. The Cubs are 52-44 on the season, 34-17 at home and 47-47 with the over/under total. Jon Lester is getting the start for Chicago today. He is 9-6 on the season with a 3.74 ERA.
The Cubs are putting up 5.09 runs per game on offense while hitting .256 at the plate. On the mound, Chicago has a 4.03 team ERA with a 1.31 team WHIP. Javier Baez is leading the team this season with 24 doubles, 22 home runs and 63 RBI. Anthony Rizzo is adding 20 doubles, 19 home runs and 61 RBI.
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres are 2-7 in their last nine games following a loss and they have lost four straight series openers.
Chicago
The Cubs have won six of their last seven home games and eight of their last 10 games following an off day.
Prediction:
Lester has won six of his last eight starts, but he has been pretty consistent at giving up a few runs while not getting through seven innings. Lauer is on a bit of a hot streak, allowing just three earned runs over his last 17 innings. Despite that, San Diego is in a funk as a team and Lauer hasn’t pitched in two weeks. Chicago is at home and the hotter team and I think the Cubs find ways to produce runs today while the Padres flame out in the key at-bats late in the game.
MLB Prediction: Chicago Cubs -155
