Padres young starter Lucchesi impressive in first two outings

Joey Lucchesi struck out nine Giants over six innings Sunday, limiting them to one run in a 10-1 win. Lucchesi was as in control as his numbers suggest, giving up just five hits without issuing a walk in the outing.

The win improved him to 2-0 with a shining 1.66 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 25/4 K/BB ratio through his first 21 2/3 innings this year. If there’s a silver lining to the Dinelson Lamet injury — and there really isn’t, to be clear — it’s that Lucchesi’s MLB debut was pushed up as a result, and he’s run with the chance.

Diamondbacks’ Corbin also shuts down Giants

Patrick Corbin allowed just one hit with one walk and eight strikeouts in a complete-game shutout against the visiting Giants on Tuesday. Corbin threw exactly 100 pitches, throwing 68 of them for strikes, and he improved to 3-0 while lowering his ERA to 1.65.

Two of his past three outings have resulted in quality starts, and he has logged at least eight strikeouts in each of his first four appearances. After allowing two homers in his first start on March 29 he hasn’t yielded a long ball in 21 2/3 innings in the month of April.

MLB Betting Trends

San Diego

The Padres are 4-11 in their last 15 games in Arizona.

Arizona

The Diamondbacks have won four of Corbin’s last five starts and are 5-0 in his last five home outings.

Prediction:

This isn’t a bad price for the Diamondbacks with Corbin on the mound. On top of the trends listed above, the Diamondbacks are also 4-1 in his last four starts coming off four days of rest, are 6-2 in his last eight outings following a quality start in his last appearance, and are 12-2 in his last 14 starts when their opponent allows five runs or more in its previous game. While Lucchesi has been great, I’ll take my chances with Corbin on the mound for Arizona.

The Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks -145
