From Rotoworld: Sale notched 13 punchouts and surrendered just two singles in eight shutout innings during a 2-0 win over the Rays on Tuesday. He allowed just four baserunners in the game and only one made it to second base. In addition to the two singles, Sale issued one walk and one batter reached base on an error by third baseman Rafael Devers. Sale threw a wild pitch to move a runner to second base in the seventh inning. That was the extent of the offense for the Rays in the ballgame. Sale is the frontrunner for the American League Cy Young Award at this point of the season and is rocking a 14-4 record with a 2.57 ERA and 0.88 WHIP. He leads the majors with 229 strikeouts against 29 walks in 161 1/3 innings. He stands a great chance of becoming the fourth pitcher of the century to record 300 strikeouts in a season (Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, Clayton Kershaw).
Updating an earlier report, Montgomery (head) is still in line to start Sunday night against the Red Sox. Montgomery had a freak accident Saturday when he was struck in the head while signing autographs during batting practice. However he escaped without injury—save for a minor cut on his right ear—and will start as planned Sunday against Boston. He’ll be opposed by Cy Young frontrunner Chris Sale.
