MLB Predictions & Picks: Our 3 Best Bets for Thursday July 2, 2026 MLB Predictions & Picks: Our 3 Best Bets for Thursday July 2, 2026

Roki Sasaki and the runaway Dodgers headline the Thursday board, yet the sharpest value rarely sits with the biggest names. Philadelphia opens the day at home in a getaway-day matinee. Cleveland and Chicago then renew an AL Central rivalry under the lights.

The nightcap sends a slumping San Diego club into Los Angeles, where the hosts hold a nine-game lead in the NL West. Our three plays are spread across the clock on purpose. Expect an afternoon run-line lean, an early-evening moneyline fade of the betting public, and a late West Coast total. Each pick arrives with the case for and the case against. Here is how the card breaks down, one game at a time.

Early Game — Pittsburgh Pirates at Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies (48-38) hand the ball to right-hander Alan Rangel for his fourth appearance of the season. Rangel carries a 4.50 ERA and a limited big-league sample. Pittsburgh (43-43) counters with Jared Jones, who owns a 1-1 record and a 5.76 ERA. Jones is still finding his rhythm after returning from last May’s elbow surgery, and his command has wavered across five starts back.

Philadelphia has been the steadier group all summer, sitting 10 games above .500. The lineup also has the length to punish an inconsistent starter. Jones has flashed swing-and-miss stuff, however, he has also allowed hard contact and a WHIP near 1.50 since his debut. Meanwhile, the Pirates’ offense remains one of the thinner units in the National League.

That run-scoring gap is the heart of this matchup. A rested home favorite facing a pitcher rebuilding his feel is a familiar setup. For a fuller breakdown, see our Pirates vs. Phillies preview.

The Pick: Philadelphia Phillies Run Line -1.5 (+150)

Laying the run line at plus money is the appeal here. A -134 home favorite that wins comfortably returns +150 on the -1.5, which is fair value given the pitching edge. The case against is real, though. Baseball favorites lose by exactly one run often, and a shaky Rangel could keep Pittsburgh within striking distance. Bullpen variance in a tight game is the obvious risk. Still, the price outweighs that concern for us at this number.

Mid-Day Game — Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Guardians

Cleveland (45-42) starts right-hander Slade Cecconi (4-6, 4.18 ERA) at Progressive Field. Chicago (45-40) answers with Davis Martin, who has been the story of the staff at 9-3 with a 3.00 ERA. On paper, Martin is the better arm today. The market, however, has not treated this as a Chicago game.

These two sit within a game of each other in a crowded AL Central. The White Sox opened as moneyline favorites near -122. That number has since drifted toward a pick’em, with Cleveland now the slight home favorite. Reverse line movement like that matters because the public is loaded on Chicago. When money pushes toward the less-backed side, it often signals sharper interest.

Home context helps the read, too. Cleveland’s slate now runs through the new CLEGuardians.TV regional service, and the club has generally played cleaner baseball in its own park. A rested bullpen only adds to that edge.

The Pick: Cleveland Guardians Moneyline (-113)

We like Cleveland at a fair home price against a heavily bet road side. The reverse line movement, plus a rested bullpen, tilts the lean toward the Guardians. The counterpoint is Davis Martin. His 3.00 ERA is legitimate, and if he controls the strike zone, Cleveland’s offense can go quiet in a hurry. Backing a home dog that became a slight favorite means trusting the market read over the raw ERA gap. That is the trade-off we are comfortable making.

Late Game — San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers

San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers — Time & How to Watch

WhereDodger Stadium, Los Angeles CA
WhenThursday, July 2 – 10:10 PM ET
TVSportsNet LA / MLB Network

Los Angeles (56-31) is the class of the division and just pounded San Diego earlier in the week. Roki Sasaki (3-5, 4.88 ERA) takes the ball for the Dodgers. San Diego (43-42) sends Randy Vasquez (6-6, 4.44 ERA) into a difficult spot after dropping five games in a row. The Padres arrive cold, and the schedule offers little relief.

Both starters carry ERAs in the mid-4s, which normally points toward runs. Dodger Stadium, however, has long played as a pitcher-friendly venue, especially late at night. The Padres’ bats have gone quiet during the skid, and Vasquez has kept the ball in the yard more often than not. A muted San Diego lineup lowers the ceiling on this total.

The counter-case is straightforward. Los Angeles has the star power to break a game open in a single inning. Sasaki’s elevated ERA also invites a crooked number if his command slips early. This is a total that hinges on which version of the Dodgers’ offense shows up.

The Pick: Under 9.0 (-105)

The number ticked up from 8.5 to 9.0, which gives Under backers a slightly better price. A cold Padres offense and a pitcher’s park support the lean. The case against is loud, though. Los Angeles just scored in bunches against this same opponent, and Sasaki’s elevated ERA can produce a big inning. If the Dodgers’ stars connect early, the Under is in trouble fast. We accept that risk at the improved 9.0 number.

Today’s MLB Best Bets Recap

To recap Thursday’s card, we are on the Phillies run line at -1.5 in the matinee, the Guardians on the moneyline in the evening, and the Under in the Dodgers-Padres nightcap. That mix gives us a run line, a moneyline, and a total spread across three time slots. For more context, revisit Wednesday’s MLB best bets.
