Gerrit Cole and Roki Sasaki headline a loaded Friday night as the Los Angeles Dodgers visit the Bronx to open a marquee weekend series against the New York Yankees. The evening only gets deeper from there, with a National League Cy Young contender on the mound in Atlanta and a low-scoring duel to close the night in Seattle.
The second half is in full swing, and the pitching gap from game to game shapes three best bets tonight: a heavyweight total in the Bronx, a primetime side built around one of the league’s hottest arms, and and a late total from the West Coast. Here is how we are playing each spot.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Yankees — Time & How to Watch
| Where | Yankee Stadium, Bronx NY |
| When | Friday, July 17 – 7:05 PM ET |
| TV | MLB Network / YES Network / SportsNet LA |
The Dodgers arrive in the Bronx at 61-36 and comfortably atop the NL West, while the Yankees sit at 54-42 and in the thick of the AL East race. It is a rematch of 2024 World Series foes. New York hands the ball to veteran right-hander Gerrit Cole, while Los Angeles counters with flame-throwing right-hander Roki Sasaki.
The pitching lines invite runs. Cole carries a 4.04 ERA and Sasaki sits at 5.33, and both offenses rank among the most dangerous in the sport. Yankee Stadium’s short right-field porch only adds to the scoring profile. When two hittable starters meet two elite lineups in a bandbox, the total becomes the cleanest way to play it.

The Pick: Over 9.0 (-110)
The case for the over is the gap between the pitching and the expectation. Neither Cole nor Sasaki has missed enough bats this year to trust a quiet night, and the Dodgers and Yankees both punish mistakes. A nine-run total in this ballpark is very much in play. The case against is pedigree. Cole is a former Cy Young winner capable of a vintage six-inning start, and if Sasaki’s velocity plays up, this can flip into a duel quickly. We still lean over, trusting the bats against two starters who have been hittable all season.
Primetime Game — Texas Rangers at Atlanta Braves
Texas Rangers vs. Atlanta Braves — Time & How to Watch
| Where | Truist Park, Atlanta GA |
| When | Friday, July 17 – 7:15 PM ET |
| TV | BravesVision |
Atlanta opens a three-game set at home riding one of the best rotation arms in baseball. Chris Sale carries a 2.20 ERA with 117 strikeouts and has been even sharper of late, and the Braves entered the weekend atop the NL East at 55-40. Texas arrives at 49-47, leading a soft AL West but sending contact-oriented right-hander Cal Quantrill (3-1, 3.11 ERA) into a tough road spot.
Both clubs went 5-5 over their last 10 games, so neither is scorching hot. The separator here is the mound. Sale misses bats at an elite rate, while Quantrill relies on soft contact and defense, a profile that can get exposed against a deep Atlanta lineup at home. Our complete Rangers vs. Braves preview digs further into the lineup edges.

The Pick: Atlanta Braves Run Line -1.5 (+105)
The case for laying the run line is price and profile. A moneyline of -215 offers little value, but the run line pays plus money for essentially the same read: an ace at home against an average offense on a rough road stretch. The public agrees, with 87 percent of run-line tickets on Atlanta. The case against matters too. Run lines ask the favorite to win by two, and Sale’s outings can turn into tight, low-scoring affairs where a late Texas run keeps the margin at one. Bullpen variance in the seventh and eighth is the real risk. We accept that trade-off for the plus-money number.
Late Game — San Francisco Giants at Seattle Mariners
San Francisco Giants vs. Seattle Mariners — Time & How to Watch
| Where | T-Mobile Park, Seattle WA |
| When | Friday, July 17 – 10:10 PM ET |
| TV | NBC Sports Bay Area / Mariners Network |
The nightcap closes the slate in one of the game’s best pitcher’s parks. Seattle sends right-hander Bryce Miller, who has been overpowering since he returned from the injured list this season. Miller carries a 2.18 ERA and a microscopic 0.83 WHIP, and he fanned eight over seven shutout innings against the Angels on July 2.
San Francisco answers with right-hander Landen Roupp, a 6-8 starter with a 4.27 ERA whose results have swung start to start. His last time out on July 7, he spun eight innings of one-run ball against Toronto. The blend of a dominant Seattle arm, a low-humidity marine park, and an already-thin total sets up a run-scarce night.
San Francisco Giants vs. Seattle Mariners Odds
| Run Line | Moneyline | Total | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Giants | +1.5 (-180) | +132 | U 7.0 (+100) |
| Mariners | -1.5 (+155) | -158 | O 7.0 (-120) |

The Pick: Under 7.0 (+100)
The case for the under is straightforward. A total of seven is already low, Miller has been one of the stingiest starters in the league, and T-Mobile Park suppresses run scoring at night. Getting the under at even money adds value against a juiced over. The case against runs through Roupp. His 4.27 ERA means he can give a game away in a single frame, and Seattle’s bats could push five or six if he wobbles early. We prefer the plus-money under and trust Miller to keep his side of the ledger quiet.
Today’s MLB Best Bets Recap
Three plays for a loaded Friday night. We are on the Over 9.0 in the Dodgers–Yankees opener in the Bronx, the Atlanta Braves run line at -1.5 in primetime, and the Under 7.0 in the Giants–Mariners nightcap. The mix pairs an over and an under with one side backing an elite home arm.
