Beltran’s Yanks pursue three in a row vs. Halos
The Angels’ biggest bats continue to flounder. New York’s primary offensive threat, on the other hand, keeps producing as if it’s 2006.
Carlos Beltran tries to lead the Yankees to a third straight win against Los Angeles tonight, with a 7:05 p.m. ET first pitch in the Bronx. Oddsmakers at online sports book Bovada.lv like the hosts as 1.5-run favorites. Mike Scioscia’s group, however, enters as a +175 underdog. The over/under run figure sits at nine.

Only four hitters in the American League boast more homers than the 39-year-old Beltran, whose 15th blast came off David Huff in yesterday’s 6-3 victory. As he did at previous stops at Kansas City, Houston and St. Louis, the right fielder is simply carrying Joe Girardi’s club. Beltran paces the Yanks in dingers, runs (31), RBIs (38), slugging percentage (.549) and OPS (.850).
He’s also cranked a pair of jacks vs. this evening’s Los Angeles hurler, Jered Weaver (5-4, 5.18 ERA). The veteran righty most recently surrendered two runs and six base knocks to Pittsburgh. He’s lost four of six decisions, though, and success in New York has been difficult to achieve. Weaver holds a 1-3 record with an 8.71 ERA in the Yankees’ current venue.

It would help if Mike Trout and Albert Pujols rallied to his cause. The two sluggers have combined for just two hits in the series, and Pujols’ average hovers around the .240 mark. Trout probably can’t defeat Nathan Eovaldi (6-2, 4.09) all by himself, so look for the Halos to drop their eighth consecutive visit to New York.
