Tony Gonsolin picked up his first victory of the 2023 campaign on Sunday, hurling five shutout innings against the Padres. The right-hander racked up six strikeouts on the afternoon while scattering just two hits and one walk. The biggest threat against him came in the opening inning as Fernando Tatis Jr. led off the game with a double and then swiped third base with two outs, but Gonsolin punched out Xander Bogaerts to squash that threat. The 29-year-old hurler has been outstanding through his first four starts, compiling a 1.42 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 16/6 K/BB ratio across 19 innings. He’ll look to keep the good times rolling as he squares off against the Cardinals in St. Louis on Friday.

Steven Matz surrendered three runs in 5 1/3 innings Saturday in a no-decision against the Red Sox. Matz was adequate, which is about as nice a thing as one can say about any of his starts this season. His velocity was a little better than usual today, yet he still didn’t get a single swing and miss on any of the 22 curves or eight changeups he threw. He remains winless at 0-4 with a 5.62 ERA through eight starts, and his rotation spot could still be in some jeopardy.
