Boyd spins shutout
Matthew Boyd threw six shutout innings Wednesday night at Baltimore to lead Detroit to a 3-0 victory. Boyd allowed six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk to pick up the win. Shane Greene earned his 17th save of the season as he struck out one in one perfect inning of relief. Niko Goodrum went 1-for-5 with a solo home run to help pace the offense. Christin Stewart ended the night 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. JaCoby Jones finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk and an RBI. Ryan Carpenter will start tonight for the Tigers as he is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA, 1.57 WHIP with 12 strikeouts over 14 innings.
Orioles unable to mount offense
Baltimore was unable to cross the plate Tuesday night in a 3-0 home loss against Detroit to drop to 17-38 overall and 7-20 at home. D.J. Stewart helped pace the Orioles offense as he went 3-for-4 plus a stolen base. Jonathan Villar was 2-for-3 with a walk. Hanser Alberto completed the contest 1-for-4. Dylan Bundy suffered the loss as he gave up three earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and no walks over seven innings. John Means draws the start tonight as he comes in with a 5-4 record, 1.96 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 38 strikeouts over 48 2/3 innings.
MLB Betting Trends
Detroit
The Tigers are 9-22 in their last 31 games overall. Detroit is 0-4 in the last four starts by Carpenter.
Baltimore
The Orioles are 14-38 in their last 52 games overall. Baltimore is 0-5 in its last five Wednesday games.
Prediction:
Carpenter might have looked competent in his last start, but the bigger sample size at the MLB level is horrendous. He certainly is no Boyd and will likely struggle to fool bats tonight. Conversely, Means seems like the type of pitcher that will baffle and frustrate Tigers hitters as he isn’t overpowering but is good at inducing weak contact. Both teams stink, but I expect the Orioles will stink less tonight.
