Cubs to sign Lester, WS odds improve
CHICAGO, IL (The Spread) – Jon Lester is on the verge of becoming a Chicago Cub and oddsmakers have reacted by changing the club’s 2015 World Series odds.
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that Lester will sign with the Cubs for six years and $155 million. Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan writes that the Red Sox offered Lester $135 million over six years but the free agent decided to take more money with a Cubs team that is seemingly on the rise. He’ll now lead a rotation that also includes Jake Arrieta and Jason Hammel.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Cubs are now 14/1 to win the 2015 World Series after being 16/1 before signing Lester. When the deal is made official, there’s a chance Chicago’s odds climb even higher. They opened with 18/1 World Series odds back in late October.
Now we’ll wait and see where and for how much free agent starter Max Scherzer signs for in the upcoming weeks. Phillies’ ace Cole Hamels could also be acquired via a trade, which would shift the landscape in both leagues as well. After losing out on Lester, Boston could be a landing spot for Hamels.
