Cubs’ Chatwood pitches seven scoreless innings vs. Brewers
Tyler Chatwood tossed seven scoreless innings as the Cubs shut out the Brewers 2-0 on Sunday. Chatwood scattered two hits and three walks, striking out four in the dominant outing. It was the second consecutive above-average performance for the 28-year-old, who is now 2-3 with a 2.83 ERA through five starts. A matchup with the division-rival Cardinals awaits Chatwood on Saturday.
Cardinals’ Weaver stumbles late in loss to Pirates
Luke Weaver held the Pirates scoreless through five innings but fell apart in the sixth Sunday, giving up four runs in 5 1/3 innings of work in a loss.
Weaver and Pirates rookie starter Nick Kingham were locked in a scoreless duel through five, but it was Weaver who blinked first, loading the bases and giving up a two-run single to Elias Diaz. That was the end of his day, but reliever Jordan Hicks allowed two more inherited runs to score, further marring Weaver’s line.
He struck out six and walked two while allowing six hits in total on the afternoon. Weaver now owns a 5.17 ERA and 1.37 WHIP through six starts after he started the year 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA through his first three outings. Life doesn’t get any easier for the 24-year-old next Sunday when the Cubs, a team that’s already battered him once this year, come to town.
MLB Betting Trends
Chicago
Despite their loss last night, the Cubs are 12-4 in their last 16 games against the Cardinals overall.
St. Louis
The Cardinals have won three straight overall and a perfect 5-0 in their last five games played at Busch Stadium.
Prediction:
Weaver has a lot of potential and will likely be a fixture in the Cardinals’ starting rotation for years to come. That said, St. Louis is just 1-4 in Weaver’s last five starts and is 1-4 in his last five home outings when he faces a team with a winning record. The Cubs, meanwhile, are 41-17 in their last 58 games coming off a loss and have a 5-1 record over their last six games against the rest of the National League Central. The Cubs are a good bounce-back candidate today.
The Pick: Chicago Cubs +118
