Despite giving up five runs in six innings, Shohei Ohtani improved to 4-0 as the Angels edged the A’s 8-7 on Thursday. Ohtani’s bat made a big difference, as he nearly hit for the cycle. He needed the homer in his final at-bat and came up just a few feet short on his 389-foot blast to center. His triple earlier in the game should have been caught, but Conner Capel, fighting the sun, hit the wall in right just as he was trying to glove it, allowing the ball to drop. On the mound, Ohtani was utterly dominant for three innings before a wild fourth saw him hit two batters and give up his first two homers of the year. He rebounded from there, but that one inning took his ERA to 1.85 and will probably cost him AL Pitcher of the Month honors for April.
St. Louis Cardinals DFS SPIN
Miles Mikolas pitched 6 1/3 innings and combined with two relievers on a 6-0 shutout of the Giants on Thursday. Genesis Cabrera and Drew VerHagen finished up. It’s easily Mikolas’s best outing to date this season and also his first win in six tries. He lowered his ERA from 7.56 to 5.97. His next turn will be a home start against the Angels.
