Tonight’s pitching matchup has J.A. Happ (9-11, 3.64 ERA) on the mound for the Blue Jays to face Chris Sale (17-7, 2.75) of the Red Sox. Sale has been alternating good starts with bad and is coming off an 8-inning scoreless effort against the Orioles last week. He has 300 strikeouts with 41 walks and a 0.95 WHIP. Happ has allowed one earned run in four of his last five starts. He has 133 strikeouts this season with 46 walks and a 1.35 WHIP.
Toronto opened this series with a 6-4 win over the Red Sox on Monday night as a big underdog. The Jays are now 74-83 overall and 32-44 on the road. Boston is now 91-65 overall and 46-29. The Red Sox have a magic number of 3 to win the AL East.
Monday’s gave saw the Blue Jays start fast and hold on for the win. Drew Pomeranz lasted just two innings for Boston, giving up five runs to take his sixth loss of the year. Brett Anderson pitched five innings and gave up three runs to get his second win with the team. Josh Donaldson had his 31st home run of the season and drove in three runs to lead the Jays. Ryan Goins had three hits as well while scoring two runs. Mookie Betts had two hits and drove in two runs to lead the Red Sox.
Sale has been flipping the good with the bad, so the trends say he won’t be great tonight. However, his team is coming off a loss and he has great numbers against the Blue Jays. He has started three games against Toronto and has not allowed a run over 22 innings vs. the Jays. Happ has been good against Boston, but still has allowed six runs over 16.2 innings over three starts. Sale knows his team needs to finish of this AL East race and he should be on his game. I like the Sox tonight.
