German Marquez (10-7, 4.41 ERA) gets the start for Colorado, while San Diego goes with Luis Perdomo (8-10, 4.57). Marquez has a 1.38 WHIP with 142 strikeouts over 151 innings. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk over six innings in a 4-3 loss at the Giants his last start. Marquez has a 4.23 ERA in 76 2/3 road innings. Perdomo has a 1.52 WHIP with 110 strikeouts in 151 1/3 innings. He gave up two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and five walks in 5 1/3 innings in a 4-2 home win over the Diamondbacks his last start. Perdomo has a 4.59 ERA in 86 1/3 innings at home.
Colorado enters with an 83-72 record and is 40-40 on the road, while San Diego is 70-85 and 43-37 at home. The Rockies have won six of the last 10 meetings and the total has gone under in six of those games including the last four.
The Padres won Saturday’s game via a 5-0 shutout as Jhoulys Chacin threw six scoreless innings with one hit allowed and six strikeouts. Wil Myers was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored. Cory Spangenburg went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. Austin Hedges was 3-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run. Chad Bettis was saddled with the loss as he gave up one earned run in 4 2/3 innings. Ian Desmond had two hits in four at-bats.
It seems pretty obvious that the Rockies are feeling the pressure of leading the race for the second wild card spot in the NL by such a slim margin with the Brewers and Cardinals breathing down their neck. They have struggled at the Giants and now the Padres on this road trip. Perdomo is a better pitcher than his numbers indicate and could frustrate Colorado with his high ground ball rate. Marquez seems to be fatiguing in his rookie year, making matters worse for the Rockies.
